Abstract

Purpose

Water lubrication is significant for its environmental friendliness. Composite journal bearing is liable to deform for the huge pressure of water film. This paper aims to study the influence of elastic deformation on how lubrication functions in water-lubricated journal bearings and to provide references for designing composite journal bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

The combination of computational fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction is adopted in this paper to study the lubrication performance of water-lubricated compliant journal bearings. The influences of elasticity modulus and Poisson’s ratio on load-carrying capacity and elastic deformation are studied for different rotational speeds. Predictions in this work are compared with the published experimental results, and the present work agrees well with the experimental results.

Findings

A reference whether elastic deformation should be considered for composite journal bearings is proposed under different working conditions. Besides, a reference to determine water-lubricated plain journal bearings dimensions under different loads and rotational speeds is developed with the effect of both elastic deformation and cavitation being accounted.

Originality/value

The present research provides references as to whether elastic deformation should be considered in operation and to determine compliant journal bearings’ dimensions in the design process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity of a water-lubricated journal bearing by a new bush structure. Water-lubricated bearing is becoming more and more popular since it is environmentally friendly and saves energy. However, contrary to oil and grease-lubricated bearings, water-lubricated bearing is limited in many situations due to its low hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity.

Design/methodology/approach

The present article proposes a new bearing bush, with a transition-arc structure, which is favorable for increasing hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity. Hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity was calculated by means of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (3-D CFD) analysis. Several variants of a journal bearing with a transition-arc structure of different dimensions are analyzed, while the radial clearance of the bearing, eccentricity ratio and the velocity of the journal remain unchanged.

Findings

The results show that obvious changes are found in hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity of a water-lubricated journal bearing. For different width over diameter (L/D) bearing ratios, the relationship between hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity and the magnitude of the transition-arc structure dimension is researched.

Originality/value

The research presented here leads to a design reference guideline that could be used by the designer engineer to design smart journal bearings for improving the hydrodynamic load-carrying capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on initial observation, this paper aims to explore the current practices of collaborative knowledge sharing (KS) between North West Universities and highlight new avenues of future relevant research.

Design/methodology/approach

A netnographic observation was conducted to unveil the current practices of KS between North West Universities.

Findings

The paper concludes that there is little or no evidence of collaborative KS practices amongst North West Universities in response to the present Covid-19 transition.

Practical implications

This paper provides useful, practical insight that may assist decision-makers to establish KS initiatives within North West Universities and beyond. A strategy is also proposed to nurture collaborative KS amongst North West Universities and within wider work-applied management practice.

Originality/value

This paper presents an unconventional conceptualisation of KS practices amid the present Covid-19 pandemic with the fresh perspective of North West England Universities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a stable high-order absorbing boundary condition (ABC) based on new continued fraction for scalar wave propagation in 2D and 3D unbounded layers.

Design/methodology/approach

The ABC is obtained based on continued fraction (CF) expansion of the frequency-domain dynamic stiffness coefficient (DtN kernel) on the artificial boundary of a truncated infinite domain. The CF which has been used to the thin layer method in [69] will be applied to the DtN method to develop a time-domain high-order ABC for the transient scalar wave propagation in 2D. Furthermore, a new stable composite-CF is proposed in this study for 3D unbounded layers by nesting the above CF for 2D layer and another CF.

Findings

The ABS has been transformed from frequency to time domain by using the auxiliary variable technique. The high-order time-domain ABC can couple seamlessly with the finite element method. The instability of the ABC-FEM coupled system is discussed and cured.

Originality/value

This manuscript establishes a stable high-order time-domain ABC for the scalar wave equation in 2D and 3D unbounded layers, which is based on the new continued fraction. The high-order time-domain ABC can couple seamlessly with the finite element method. The instability of the coupled system is discussed and cured.

Abstract

Purpose

The finite element method (FEM) is used to calculate the two-dimensional anti-plane dynamic response of structure embedded in D’Alembert viscoelastic multilayered soil on the rigid bedrock. This paper aims to research a time-domain absorbing boundary condition (ABC), which should be imposed on the truncation boundary of the finite domain to represent the dynamic interaction between the truncated infinite domain and the finite domain.

Design/methodology/approach

A high-order ABC for scalar wave propagation in the D’Alembert viscoelastic multilayered media is proposed. A new operator separation method and the mode reduction are adopted to construct the time-domain ABC.

Findings

The derivation of the ABC is accurate for the single layer but less accurate for the multilayer. To achieve high accuracy, therefore, the distance from the truncation boundary to the region of interest can be zero for the single layer but need to be about 0.5 times of the total layer height of the infinite domain for the multilayer. Both single-layered and multilayered numerical examples verify that the accuracy of the ABC is almost the same for both cases of only using the modal number excited by dynamic load and using the full modal number of infinite domain. Using the ABC with reduced modes can not only reduce the computation cost but also be more friendly to the stability. Numerical examples demonstrate the superior properties of the proposed ABC with stability, high accuracy and remarkable coupling with the FEM.

Originality/value

A high-order time-domain ABC for scalar wave propagation in the D’Alembert viscoelastic multilayered media is proposed. The proposed ABC is suitable for both linear elastic and D’Alembert viscoelastic media, and it can be coupled seamlessly with the FEM. A new operator separation method combining mode reduction is presented with better stability than the existing methods.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in informal copycat-style firms. As a kind of informal economical organizations, copycat-style firms in many emerging economies play an important role in their development of the economics. The development of Shanzhai firms, Chinese-style copycat firms, from imitation to innovation has become an important micro-foundation of China’s economic growth and the manufacturing development. With the cluster development of the Chinese mobile phone industry as the macro and industrial environment background, this paper chose Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co. Ltd as the typical example of innovation in Shanzhai firms and studied the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in this company.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper chose Beijing Tianyu Communication Equipment Co. Ltd as the typical example of innovation in Shanzhai firms and studied the evolution of innovation-based dynamic capabilities in this company by adopting the leading-edge dynamic capability theory, innovation theory and industrial cluster theory. The authors further discussed how to improve the dynamic capabilities in Shanzhai firms in China.

Findings

It is finally suggested that Shanzhai firms should reduce innovation failures and lower damage degree of dynamic capabilities through consistent innovation and paying attention to their innovation improvement.

Originality/value

It will be very significant to research the survival or diminishing of Shanzhai firms from a theoretical perspective, which will eventually enhance property right protection and innovation development in China.

Abstract

Purpose

Delivery of safe products while meeting customer demand is a critical marketing requirement for logistics. To meet this requirement, this paper aims to develop a decision‐making model for distribution strategies in cold chain network with the real‐time flow and quality information of perishable foods.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first presents a real‐time monitoring solution for cold chain distribution by integrating radio frequency identification (RFiD), sensor, and wireless communication technologies. With the enhanced visibility of product flow and quality information, a multi‐stage planning model is developed to determine optimal distribution plans so that the overall cost of the entire cold chain network is minimized.

Findings

The proposed distribution‐planning model can capture the dynamics of logistics due to frequent update of product quality information during distribution. Therefore, the distribution decision will be adjusted at sequential stages to optimally preserve the product value and meet demand. The proposed solution and model can ensure an effective cold chain logistics and thus meet the marketing requirement.

Research limitations/implications

The current planning model cannot quantitatively capture all benefits, such as the social impact, due to the implementation of RFiD and other technologies.

Originality/value

The proposed solution to achieve complete visibility of the cold chain is innovative and addresses the urgent requirements for cold chain logistics from marketing perspective. For the first time, the economic benefits of real‐time information on product quality can be quantitatively evaluated by the multi‐stage planning model and this has been verified by a numerical case study.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to propose an unsupervised learning model to evaluate the credibility of disaster-related Twitter data and present a performance comparison with commonly used supervised machine learning models.

Design/methodology/approach

First historical tweets on two recent hurricane events are collected via Twitter API. Then a credibility scoring system is implemented in which the tweet features are analyzed to give a credibility score and credibility label to the tweet. After that, supervised machine learning classification is implemented using various classification algorithms and their performances are compared.

Findings

The proposed unsupervised learning model could enhance the emergency response by providing a fast way to determine the credibility of disaster-related tweets. Additionally, the comparison of the supervised classification models reveals that the Random Forest classifier performs significantly better than the SVM and Logistic Regression classifiers in classifying the credibility of disaster-related tweets.

Originality/value

In this paper, an unsupervised 10-point scoring model is proposed to evaluate the tweets’ credibility based on the user-based and content-based features. This technique could be used to evaluate the credibility of disaster-related tweets on future hurricanes and would have the potential to enhance emergency response during critical events. The comparative study of different supervised learning methods has revealed effective supervised learning methods for evaluating the credibility of Tweeter data.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore and understand consumers' perceptions and behaviour towards pyjamas in the People's Republic of China (China).

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative analysis and comparative methods were used for this study. From a large body of literature, seven product attributes were identified and used to measure and evaluate what constitutes consumers' purchasing decision for pyjamas. A total of 203 usable surveys were compiled, analyzed and collated.

Findings

This study shows evidence that consumers are more conscious of the functional values of a low‐involvement product than the symbolic values. The results of this survey indicate that comfort, fabric and quality are significant attributes, whereas country‐of‐origin and brand are relatively insignificant determinants for purchasing a pair of pyjamas.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations of this study include the use of a convenience sample of female college students and confinement to a specific product – pyjamas. The results of this study are useful for fashion designers and marketers to understand Chinese consumers' perceptions of pyjamas.

Originality/value

This study is one of the few consumer research studies on a low‐involvement and privately consumed apparel product – pyjamas. The findings of this study provide insight and implications for fashion practitioners to develop their product and business in China.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new explicit time integration algorithm for solution to the linear and non-linear finite element equations of structural dynamic and wave propagation problems.

Design/methodology/approach

The algorithm is completely explicit so that no linear equation system requires solving, if the mass matrix of the finite element equation is diagonal and whether the damping matrix does or not. The algorithm is a single-step method that has the simple starting and is applicable to the analysis with the variable time step size. The algorithm is second-order accurate and conditionally stable. Its numerical stability, dissipation and dispersion are analyzed for the dynamic single-degree-of-freedom equation. The stability of the multi-degrees-of-freedom non-proportional damping system can be evaluated directly by the stability theory on ordinary differential equation.

Findings

The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by several numerical examples including the linear single-degree-of-freedom problem, non-linear two-degree-of-freedom problem, wave propagation problem in two-dimensional layer and seismic elastoplastic analysis of high-rise structure.

Originality/value

A new single-step second-order accurate explicit time integration algorithm is proposed to solve the linear and non-linear dynamic finite element equations. The algorithm has advantages on the numerical stability and accuracy over the existing modified central difference method and Chung-Lee method though the theory and numerical analyses.
